Interior Design Trends for 2022

According to Decorilla, the emphasis on natural and sustainable home decor will continue from 2021 to 2022. In addition to the classic Scandinavian look, where nature and comfort are forefront, 2022 will also see a subtle merge of retro and natural elements.

A touch of retro

A subtle touch of retro is more than enough to update a home and give it some warmth and personality. Add tones of burnt orange, moss greens and mustard yellow to brighten up your home. Look for interesting textures and colours at your local op-shop or flea market or decorate your home with heirloom pieces.

Nature-inspired trends

The nature-inspired trend from 2021 will continue into 2022. Natural materials such granite, marble and wood will continue to be popular in 2022. Surrounding yourself with natural materials can bring a sense of calm and connectedness to your home. Bring in a bit of extra life with houseplants. Having a bit of greenery inside will not only freshen up the look of your home, it will also help purify the air.

Some of the best houseplants:

  • Monstera Deliciosas

This very popular plant is both beautiful and practical. It does not take a lot of maintenance and can be left without watering for one to two weeks.

  • Rubber tree

This dark and beautiful plant also does well with little water - in fact it prefers under-watering to over-watering. A rubber tree needs bright light and a good amount of space around it to be happy. Place the tree near a window with direct sunlight.

  • Bird’s Nest Fern

A Bird’s Nest fern is a beautiful lush green plant that is known to filter formaldehyde, xylene, and toluene which makes it a great plant for the bathroom. It also thrives with indirect sunlight and lots of humidity - another reason to place it in the bathroom.

  • Peace Lily

One of my favourite plants and another easy going choice. This plant is both beautiful and has flowers. A Peace Lily does require more watering than some of the other plants on this list, but it will let you know when it is time. It’s leaves will start to look sad and you will know it is time to give it some water.

Multifunctional spaces

Multifunctional spaces are expected to be popular in 2022. This trend is both concerned with the alignment of spaces as well as functionality. To have a multi-functional space you will need to be able to use a space in many ways. For instance - a kitchen does not only have to be for cooking, but can also be a social space that opens up to the living area. Pandemic and the closure of most social venues has meant that people are spending more time in their own living spaces and it is therefore a bigger focus on making these living spaces both functional and social.

2022 Colour trends

  • shades of Green

Muted colours are expected to be popular in 2022. Muted shades of green can refresh an interior without dominating the look. A shade of green emerging from the tones of your natural base is a great way to add colour without being overpowering.

  • White walls

When choosing colours for your home, make sure that the colours blend in with the rest of the interior. Also, consider to paint a feature wall instead of your whole house. White walls is still considered one of the best ways to create a light and inviting environment.

  • Light wooden floors

Like white walls, a light wooden floor can make a space look full of light and makes room for more colourful accessories such as rugs, pillows and artworks.

Art trends for 2022

Before we dive into some of the trends for 2022, I just want to leave a little note here. When choosing art, it is important that you choose a piece that speaks to you and not just a piece that is perceived as “trendy”. I create my artworks because I love it and because I find particular colours to be inspiring - I do not create to be on-trend. Similarly, when you choose a piece of art, it should be because you love it and hopefully you will continue to love it for many years. In other words, the art needs to stand the test of time and not trend.

  • Blue

Blue is a classic and calming colour. Blue is often associated with nature - particularly with water and the sky. Bring the outdoors inside with a blue artwork. This trend fits perfectly with the nature trend that we will see continue from 2021 to 2022.

  • large wall art

While 2021 saw the gallery wall becoming popular, 2022 will highlight some of the benefits of hanging one big piece of art instead of many small. A big piece of art can really elevate a room and become a focal point. And of course there is the benefit of having to only hang one piece of art instead of several pieces.

  • Simple line art

Simplicity is a design trend that has been with us for a while and is forecast to stay in 2022. Bring simplicity to your interior by investing in a simple piece of line art. You can find one of my most popular floral line art print here.
